SUMMARY:On the Leading Edge-ALTERED HYDROLOGY\, WATER QUALITY\, AND CONSERVATION DRAINAGE
DESCRIPTION:The On the Leading Edge series kicks off with an interactive session on altered hydrology and the role conservation drainage practices can play in meeting the goals of the IL Nutrient Loss Reduction Strategy. Speakers will focus on the science behind four practices – drainage water management\, bioreactors\, saturated buffers\, and constructed wetlands – and discuss considerations for landowners as they evaluate alternatives for reducing nutrient loss. \nFeatured Speakers: \nDr. Jane Frankenberger is a professor of Agricultural and Biological Engineering at Purdue University\, where she has built an active applied research and extension program on agricultural drainage\, watershed management\, and water quality. Dr. Frankenberger also leads the multi-state\, highly collaborative Transforming Drainage project. \nNathan Utt is a doctoral candidate with the University of Minnesota Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering Program. He has more than 10 years of experience in the drainage industry\, including designing and monitoring controlled drainage systems\, bioreactors\, and saturated buffers. \nDr. Jill Kostel is the senior environmental engineer at The Wetlands Initiative and manager of the “Smart Wetlands” program\, which advances the use of small\, farm-based wetlands to reduce nutrient runoff from tile drainage. \nDr. Laura Christianson is professional engineer and an Assistant Professor of Crop Sciences in the College of Agricultural\, Consumer\, and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois. She leads research on a variety of conservation drainage practices and works to find practical and economically viable solutions for treating agricultural drainage.

SUMMARY:Nebraska Virtual Green Infrastructure Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us on November 20\, 2020 for the Nebraska Virtual Green Infrastructure Tour!  After 12 years of face-to-face green infrastructure tours\, we will take a diversion this year and jump on the virtual tour bus! \nWe will be exploring the Tri-Cities Stormwater Program and projects in Scottsbluff\, Gering\, and Terrytown.  We’ll then travel to Kearney to explore a private-public partnership with the MS4 program\, local business\, and Kearney Highschool.  Next\, the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum will help us take a look at the Columbus Chamber of Commerce Rain Garden with a focus on plant selection.  From there\, we will travel to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s East Campus to  tour of some the green parking design\, bioretention and rain gardens . Finally\, when we go to Omaha\, we will take a flyover of phases I & II of Spring Lake Park before we talk with a community organizer\, engineer and landscape architects.  Our final stop will be at Dundee Elementary\, where we will speak with designers\, city personnel and the school’s principal about how the green infrastructure projects have impacted the school and surrounding community. CEUs available.

SUMMARY:Free Virtual Harmful Algal Bloom Research Symposium
DESCRIPTION:In the summer of 2018\, the North Central Region Water Network teamed up with Water Resources Research Institute (WRRIs) in the twelve North Central Region States to document existing resources and programs dedicated to the raising awareness for and curbing the impact of harmful algal blooms or HABs. Together\, the team cataloged existing HAB research and outreach activities and created recommendations for future educational messaging and research which they outlined in a 2019 whitepaper. \n“We learned a lot during the initial project and I think a lot of the progress was made in relationship building between team members coming from Extension and state WRRIs\,” notes Hanna Bates\, acting associate director of the Iowa Water Center and member of the team. “Now we are moving toward implementing those recommendations outlined in the whitepaper\, which is where the true work begins.”\nclick here to read more \nRegistration is now open for the event at https://northcentralwater.org/habsymposium/. Be sure to check this page periodically as the agenda is finalized and speakers are released.
