SUMMARY:ADMC Drainage Water Management Certification
DESCRIPTION:Session 1: (2 CEUs) Drainage Design and Soils: Soil and water concepts & tools\, fundamentals in drainage design\, and design tools \nSession 1 will introduce participants to soil and water interactions and how soil properties impact water movement\, availability\, and crop health. Participants will then learn how drainage systems are utilized to improve productivity and profitability. Finally\, participants will be introduced to how drainage systems are commonly designed and what tools are available to assist in the layout water management systems. \nSession 2: (1.5 CEUs) DWM Design Introduction to Drainage Water Management design \nSession 2 will introduce participants to the principles of drainage water management including conditions where the practice\napplies\, yield benefits\, and water quality impacts. Participants will be walked through what is needed to design drainage water\nmanagement systems\, applicable NRCS Conservation Practice Standards\, and will learn about water control structures commonly used in DWM systems. \nSession 3: (1.5 CEUs) DWM Design Session 3: Field Zoning\, retrofitting elevation plans\, and economics \nSession 3 will move to more advanced drainage water management concepts including how to determine the drained area\, control elevations\, and the extent of the controlled zone. Participants will also learn about economic considerations and requirements of the NRCS Drainage Implementation Activity 164. \n____________________________________________________________________ \nA total of 5 CEUs will be available for CCAs or PEs. Partial CEUs will be\navailable for completion of session 1\, 2\, or 3. \nA recording of the training session and access to the quiz modules will be made available for those that cannot make the July 7th event. \nUpon successful completion of the quiz modules\, an ADMC course certificate will be awarded. An ADMC certificate along with a submitted DIA 164 to your state NRCS can be used to obtain TSP certification for DIA 164. \nSessions 1 – 3 will be led by Dr. Gary Sands who is a Professor and Extension Engineer at the University of Minnesota. \n

SUMMARY:Field Crops Virtual Breakfast: How to Get the Best out of Your Drainage System with Ehsan Ghane
DESCRIPTION:Contact: Ehsan Ghane \n  \nTo assist farmers as they prepare for potential issues and concerns during the growing season\, Michigan State University Extension will host the Field Crops Virtual Breakfast Series every Thursday from 7-8 a.m. beginning March 31 through Sept. 22 via Zoom. \nTopic areas are loosely established at the beginning of the series based on historical trends. However\, the Virtual Breakfast Series is flexible\, fluid and able to adapt when issues arise due to unforeseen growing conditions. Each week features a timely\, 20-minute topic from an MSU specialist followed by Jeff Andresen\, MSU Extension climatologist\, presenting a 15-minute weather summary and forecast. \nFollowing the weather\, restricted use pesticide (RUP) applicators receive the information to one RUP credit (1A\, 1B\, Comm or Priv Core) and Certified Crop Advisors (CCA) can receive one continuing education unit (CEU). After RUP and CCA credit information\, attendees can leave or stay for a less formal discussion with farmers\, educators and specialists that lasts until 8 a.m. \nIf you cannot participate in the live session at 7 a.m.\, you can view the recorded version at any time. However\, only the live session will be eligible for RUP and CCA credits. Recordings will be closed-captioned and available at the Field Crops Virtual Breakfast webpage and the MSU Extension Field Crops Team social media platforms: Facebook\, Spotify\, YouTube\, Apple Podcasts and Twitter. \nIf you are unable to sign up online\, call the Lapeer County MSU Extension office at 810-667-0341.

SUMMARY:CRP Outcomes May 2022 Webinar: Scaling Saturated Buffer Adoption using the Agricultural Conservation Planning Framework
DESCRIPTION:  \nPresenter: Keegan Kult\, Executive Director of the Agricultural Drainage Management Coalition \nTraditional conservation practice delivery is not equipped to handle the demands of scaled-up implementation needed to meet regional nutrient reduction goals. As evidenced by the low adoption rates to date\, this is especially true for practices that require technical knowledge like Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) Saturated Buffers. While little work has been done to assess the barriers to adoption from a farmer or landowner’s perspective\, experienced practitioners in central Iowa sought to develop a new practice delivery framework that would address as many stakeholder barriers to adoption as possible through the Polk County Saturated Buffer Project. Keegan Kult\, Executive Director of the Agricultural Drainage Management Coalition\, will discuss piloting a systematic approach to modernize agricultural drainage infrastructure with the goal of accelerating conservation drainage practice adoption within the confines of existing technical and financial assistance programs. \nCRP Outcomes Webinars \nFSA in conjunction with our partners\, hosts a series of webinars introducing important questions about how CRP and CRP practices effect environmental benefits and providing the results of studies monitoring and assessing the CRP and CRP practices. Past webinars are recorded and are available for viewing at the link below. Upcoming webinars are posted as they are scheduled.
